Can I apply labels to a Ziplock or Polygrip bag? (PL400)

Thin zip-lock or Polygrip bags can work in the PL400.  The bag pictured below successfully triggered the sensors and applied the label shown.   If your pouch is not completely feeding through the roller or you have a floppy pouch/bag that does not engage the pouch sensor the entire time it is feeding, here are some important tips.

  1. Increase the pouch feed length.  Press and hold the MODE button until “PL” is displayed. To see how the option is currently set, press the + button. Press the + or the – button to toggle the setting up or down. By default, the system is set to zero, which uses the pouch sensor to determine when the pouch feed motor stops. If your pouch is not feeding completely through the roller, or if you have a floppy pouch/bag that does not engage the pouch sensor the entire time it is feeding, you can increase this setting from 1-40. This represents the number of inches the motor will run after the pouch is detected. Requires firmware version 1.12. If you have this version, you will see -12 or +12 (or higher) displayed briefly at startup.  Firmware can only be updated during factory service.

Other Tips: if you don't have the latest firmware installed

  2. Feed the bag zipper side first (upside down). This provides some rigidity necessary to trip the lower bag/pouch sensor. The lighter and thinner the bag, the less likely the lower sensor will be triggered.
  3. You may need to change the orientation of our label to insert the bag upside down. To accomplish this you may need to manually reroll your labels to a new core to change the application orientation. This article discusses this process.
  4. If the bag is not heavy enough to apply the label, you can use a rigid guide, such as a piece of cardboard, to help trigger the sensor.
