Label edges fold over, catch or tear, on the sensor as they are applied to the container. (AP360-AP362-AP380-AP550)

The Teflon-coated sensor flag moves forward/backward to detect gaps between labels.  This tells the applicator when to stop applying the label.

1. Clean the Sensor Flag. Over time adhesive from the labels can build up on the sensor flag just above the container rollers.  Periodically clean the top of the sensor with a q-tip and alcohol.

2. Move the sensor to the right or left edge of the label.  This can reduce the change of tearing.

3. Worn Sensor Flag.  If the Teflon coating is worn off the flag it will more easily catch adhesive build-up.  You can purchase a new flag here.

4. Adhesive on label sides.  If labels are wound too tightly, the adhesive can squeeze out from the bottom and be deposited on the sides of the labels.  This is more likely with rubber-based adhesives.  Acrylic-based adhesives are recommended for the applicator.  Primera labels all have acrylic adhesive.  Remove the label from the liner and touch the sides to check for tackiness.

5. Core Memory. Any curve of the label coming off the roll can cause it to go over the container instead of under it, which can cause all or part of the label to fold over.  Reduce the curve of the label coming off the roll.  See the tips below:

  1. Use a new roll or a larger roll of labels. Labels have more and more curve the closer you get to the core of the stock.  They "remember" that curve went they come off the roll.
  2. The older the roll and the longer the labels have been on the core, the more memory they will have.  Use a new roll that was recently converted/cut.
  3. Certain types of label stock material have more or less curve memory.  Often thicker paper stock will come off the roll with less curve.  However, paper labels tend to work better than synthetic labels like Polyester, Vinyl, or BOPP. Try different label stock.
  4. Attach a hold-down stick to the container pressure arm. Use two - one on either side of the arm.  The stick could be made of plastic, wood, or metal. To minimize the chance of the label sticking to the stick, the tip should be as round and smooth as possible.  (Example: cotton swab stick, coffee stir stick, any rounded metal rod such as a screwdriver).  Tip: Glue a strong magnet to the metal/plastic rod so the stick is more easily adjustable and removable.

  5. Reroll the label stock upside down (top of label facing inward) onto a new core to counteract curve.  Leave the rolls in the upside-down state for as long as possible.  When you are ready to use them, reroll it again with the labels facing out.   Follow this procedure to reroll the labels.
