How to clean the Encoder Wheel on an Primera LX Series Printer

The encoder Wheel controls the feed-forward and back behavior of your printer.  There are tiny lines on a clear plastic disc attached to the feed gear that are read by a sensor.  Excess ink overspray fog can settle on all surfaces of your printer over time.  If it settles here, it can prevent the sensor from reading the tiny lines that indicate where the label stock is during feeding. If you notice quality issues that are repeating in the feed direction, perform the procedure below.

1. Power off the printer.
2. Open the printer cover.
3. Locate the encoder wheel on the opposite side of the frame.  (You may find it easier to clean if you remove the cover.)
4. Use a Q-tip (cotton swab) to clean the clear plastic of the encoder wheel.
5. Rotate the wheel by using a flat screwdriver to manually rotate the gear as shown below.

Note: To prevent excess ink overspray build-up, print with the cover closed so the internal fan can create enough negative pressure to suck the overspray into the ink saturation pads.
