Barcodes can be used for many different applications. The purpose of a barcode is to create a machine-readable symbol that can be easily scanned to display or convey numbers or letters. If you intend to use Barcodes to track products in a warehouse in an internal database or create a 2D barcode to represent text such as a website URL, you can do that using the tools in sections B or C. If you are selling a new product and you need a UPC barcode to represent your product on retailers shelves, you will need to start with section 1.
A. Get a Barcode for your product
To get a UPC code for your product, you can apply through the GS1 website.
1. Estimate how many UPCs you need.
2. Go to the GS1 website.
3. Choose an option to purchase UPCs.
4. License a company prefix if you plan to create UPCs for multiple products.
5. Assign product numbers to unique products.
6. Use a check digit calculator to generate a check digit.
7. Create a product and add basic information.
8. Assign the GTIN.
9. Change the status from PreMarket to In Use.
10 Generate the barcode.
B. Use BarTender to generate a barcode to print to your label.
1. Click the Barcode Icon to get started. Choose your Barcode Type or choose More Barcodes...
2. The cursor will change to Barcode. Click where you would like to place it.
3. A placeholder barcode will be created.
4. Right-click the barcode and choose properties, or double-click it to edit the numbers and other properties.
5. In properties you can input the numbers or letters the barcode will represent, change the size and color of the barcode, and change whether the numbers are visible or not.
